Street Fighter V story details explain both past and present

I’ve never really understood the purpose of story in fighting games. I mean, Ryu, Dhalism, and the rest of the Street Fighter gang are a charismatic bunch, but any canon beyond them needing to win a fight falls flat on me, especially because fighting games, by nature of having a dozen characters or so, have multiple conflicting endings.

But still, it all has its place for those who love canon. Street Fighter V is going to have two different kinds of stories for each character: a Character Story detailing their past and a Cinematic Story Expansion which fleshes out their roles in the current events.

Character Stories exist to introduce newcomers to who these characters are and why they enjoy rumbling so much. They will explain the character’s origins, motivations, and important relationships with other characters. Cutscenes will be drawn by “renowned Japanese illustrator, Bengus,” who has worked with Capcom on previous titles.

The Cinematic Story Expansion segments will not be available upon the game’s release. However, it will be available for free in June 2016, and it will be the first time the series delivers a tale through the use of pre-rendered cutscenes. The events will focus primarily on M. Bison and the Shadaloo organization, and they take place between the events of Street Fighter IV and Street Fighter III.

Street Fighter V will be released in North American for the PlayStation 4 and PC on Feb. 16.
